Ambrosone to Be Installed as Chairperson for the Molecular Epidemiology Group of the AACR
BUFFALO, NY - Christine B. Ambrosone, PhD, Chair, Department of Epidemiology, Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), will have a leadership role at the 2006 annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), April 1-5, at the Washington Convention Center, Washington, DC.
During the annual meeting, Dr. Ambrosone will be installed as the current Chairperson for the Molecular Epidemiology Group of the AACR, a working group that serves as a forum for cross-training and interdisciplinary research among epidemiologists, clinicians, and basic scientists interested in bridging disciplines for a comprehensive approach to cancer research.
Dr. Ambrosone will chair the workshop, “Sample Collection, Processing and Storage for Large Scale Studies: Biorepositories to Support Cancer Research,” Saturday, April 1, 2-4 pm, in Room 147. At 2:10 pm, she will present an “Overview of Establishment of Biospecimen Banks.” With a growing recognition of the importance of biospecimens for research, numerous institutions, including Roswell Park, are establishing banks and collecting samples as part of specific studies.
Dr. Ambrosone also will chair a symposium, “Testing the Cruciferous Vegetable-Cancer Relationship: From Basic Science to Observational Studies and Back,” Wednesday, April 5, 10 am-noon, in Room 151. The symposium will focus on how the integration of research using mouse models, cell lines, epidemiologic observational data and intervention studies has improved the understanding of the role of diet in carcinogenesis and cancer prevention. At 11 am, Dr. Ambrosone will present “Epidemiological Evidence for Chemopreventive Effects of Cruciferous Vegetables on Cancer Risk.”
At 10:10 am at the same session, Yeusheng Zhang, PhD, Department of Chemoprevention, RPCI, will present, “Crucifer-Derived Isothiocyanates: Chemopreventive Activity and Mechanism of Action.”
Dr. Ambrosone’s research interests focus on molecular epidemiology and the role of genetic factors in modifying relationships between reproductive, dietary and environmental exposures and cancer risk.
Founded in 1907, the American Association for Cancer Research is the world’s oldest and largest professional organization dedicated to advancing cancer research. Members include more than 24,000 basic, translational and clinical researchers, health care professionals, cancer survivors and advocates in the United States and more than 60 other countries.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute, founded in 1898, is the nation’s first cancer research, treatment and education center and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Upstate New York. RPCI is a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the nation’s leading cancer centers.
