Roswell Park Faculty Invited As Experts to National Organizations

BUFFALO, NY – Three faculty members from Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) have been appointed to prestigious positions by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).
Alex Adjei, MD, PhD, Senior Vice President of Clinical Research and Chair of the Department of Medicine, will serve as Section Editor of the Medical Oncology Section of Cancer, the official journal of the ACS. This medical journal, which was first published in 1948, has an important international impact on cancer research by publishing peer reviewed articles. The editorial board is comprised of the top people in the field of oncology from respected institutions worldwide.
Dr. Adjei is a distinguished national leader in translational research, drug development and thoracic oncology. He is an active member of many professional organizations and is co-chairing the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research from April 14 - 18, 2007.
Martin C. Mahoney, MD, PhD, Department of Health Behavior, Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, has been re-appointed to the Primary Care Advisory Committee of the ACS. This committee works to advise and assist the ACS in efforts to include primary care clinicians at all levels of the organization; establish meaningful relationships with primary care organizations; address issues of disparity in cancer care and to guide the ACS efforts to promote primary care-based prevention, early detection, supportive, survivorship and end of life services.
Dr. Mahoney’s research focuses on examining cancer screening utilization and promotion and developing educational and training programs for physicians and non-physician providers. He serves as a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Guideline Panel and has authored or co-authored more than 125 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts.
Brahm Segal, MD, Chief of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, will serve as co-editor for the Fever and Neutropenia section of the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. The Journal, launched in 2003, builds on the NCCN’s mission of improving patient care by offering comprehensive clinical practice guidelines, review and original research papers, correspondence and commentary.
Dr. Segal is co-chair of the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines Panel, “Prevention and Treatment of Infections in Patients with Cancer.” Dr. Segal and co-chair Alison Freifeld, University of Nebraska Medical Center, will present the panel’s recommendations at the NCCN Annual Conference, Mary 14 -18, 2007. His research interests focus on infectious complications in patients with cancer, immunity against fungal infections and regulation of inflammation. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications.
