Roswell Park Scientist to Join
Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope™
Team as They Embark on
Cross-Country Journey for Cancer Research
BUFFALO, NY - Harry K. Slocum, PhD, cancer research scientist in the Departments of Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), will be joining the 2005 Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope™ Team on their cross-country journey.
The team will begin a nine-day, 3,300 mile cross-country bicycle relay in San Diego on Thursday, September 29, and will ride into Washington, DC on Saturday, October 8 for a Grand Finale event. Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner and testicular cancer survivor, is leading the cycling team on their first leg across the country, and will join the Team at various points along the way.
"My life's work has been to defeat cancer. I am proud to be a member of the 2005 Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope™. It is another contribution I can make, along with my research efforts, to increase public awareness about this disease which has claimed the lives of so many, including eight members of my own family," said Dr. Slocum.
"Each day, this team will ride the equivalent of approximately one stage in the Tour de France for nine days,” said Armstrong. “They are not professional cyclists, but they are undertaking this challenging ride to prove that cancer research is the way forward in battling this disease.”
Dr. Slocum joins a team which is comprised of other cancer researchers, cancer survivors, caregivers, nurses and physicians. Representing 19 states, these riders have been brought together to share their unique experiences in treating, researching, living with or helping a loved one cope with cancer.
Dr. Slocum joined the staff of RPCI in 1976 and his research interests focus on the cell biology of human solid tumors; cell interaction and growth control and the mechanisms of cellular resistance to anticancer agents. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts and serves as a reviewer for many cancer journals including Cancer Research and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
