Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolus

Overview		Tumors can cause the blood to clot more easily. Patients are more susceptible to blood clots in the leg (Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT). Clots can also move to the lung (Pulmonary Embolus or PE). Additional risk factors for blood clots are immobility and tight stockings or socks that can slow circulation. Poor fluid intake can lead to dehydration, also increasing the risk of clots. Smoking and poor circulation also increase the risk of a blood clot.
Symptoms of DVT		You should call your provider immediately if you have these symptoms Swelling of the leg (one side more than the other) Redness or warmth of the leg Pain at the area of redness or swelling
Symptoms of PE		You should call your provider immediately if you have these symptoms Sudden onset of shortness of breath Pain in the chest that is worse with a deep breath Coughing up phlegm with streaks of blood
How to Prevent Blood Clots		Exercise your legs regularly Walking is the best exercise If you are not able to walk, move your legs at least every half hour whenever you are awake Do not cross your legs Do not wear socks or knee high stocking that are tight enough to leave an indent on your leg Drink adequate fluids Click here to return to the the WNY Brain Tumor Center main page.

Overview
