The Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Program, led by Christine Ambrosone, PhD and James Marshall, PhD, conducts research to understand and prevent cancer morbidity and mortality by identifying exposures and genetic factors that interact to affect cancer risk and prognosis, and by developing interventions for cancer prevention at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
Additional information about the sections of the Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Department is available by clicking here.
The Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Research program has three primary research themes. These include:
- determine the roles of nutrition, obesity and chemopreventive agents in cancer etiology and prognosis;
- evaluate susceptibility, as operationalized by gene-enviironment interactions, in cancer etiology and prognosis
- design and test interventions that minimize the impact of tobacco use on disease risk
To facilitate program planning, multidisciplinary research working groups in epidemiology, biomarkers, tobacco control, lung and breast cancer have been formed to brainstorm ideas for research projects. In addition, the program sponsors a weekly seminar series to allow program members to interact and share research ideas.
