Assistant Research Professor
State University of New York at Buffalo
Dr. Surabhi Kakati joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1973. She earned her doctoral degree in Cytogenetics at Banaras Hindu University, India (1970) and completed postdoctoral training at the Robert A. Welch Foundation, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX (1973).
Dr. Kakati's major research interest is chromosome study in human cancers, especially leukemia. She has authored or co-authored over 80 publications, book chapters and abstracts.
General Research Interest
The objective of our research is to understand the relationships between chromosomal abnormalities and the genetic events occurring in cancers. Structural and numerical chromosomal abnormalities are characteristic of leukemias, lymphomas, and solid tumors. The final chromosomal profile, or karyotype, is obtained using computer assisted image analysis software, after the biological material has been subjected to various chromosomal banding techniques, including spectral karyotyping. Chromosomal abnormalities are associated with the molecular activation and modification of oncogene expression. These molecular events are detected using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques, including chromosomal painting with DNA probes.
