Background
Dr. Matsui joined Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 1976 and has been serving as Director of the SKY Resource since 2000. His expertise encompasses genetics, cytogenetics, biochemistry, enzymology, pharmacology, molecular and cell biology. Dr. Matsui invented N-banding techniques which allow in situ detection of rDNA-bound non-histone chromosome proteins. He also discovered and characterized isopeptidase (also dubbed ‘ubiquitin-deconjugation enzyme’) which has been implicated in Parkinson’s disease, tumor suppressors, androgen signaling, synapsis function, etc. ‘Isopeptidase’, the term christened by Dr. Matsui, is widely accepted by the scientific community with citations in more than 66,000 articles (Google search as of Sept. 2007). He was the Assistant Editor of Cancer Genetics and Cytogenetics for 10 years. He served on an NIH Study Section for evaluation of the Cancer Center Program Grants. He was also an external grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation and the Medical Research Council in Canada.
Description of Research
- Genomic instability of cancer. Its magnitude ranges from chromosomal level to nucleotide level. Our interest is focused on identification of chromosomal changes which alter the expression of genes which in turn causes pathological conditions associated with malignancy
- Collaborating with DNA Microarray and Gene Expression Resources as well as by inter-institutional collaborations, we are attempting to define underlying mechanisms of genomic instability. A discovery that DNA methyltransferases are highly involved in chromosomal instability highlights one of our recent accomplishments.
